F.AM.E. NYC Magazine: A History of Violence

Before the art world beckoned, Russell past incarnations included celebrity photography and directing music videos. A History of Violence examines the connection this country has to violence through iconic imagery and eye popping color. I’m sure Russell’s background in photography aided in his selections of photos, which were stunning and told individual stories that help to contribute to the entire visual narrative.

Hollywood has always had a fascination with the Wild West; in fact movies depicting boisterous stories from that time help to save Hollywood and television. Shows like Wagon Training, The Rifleman and Maverick taught generations of kids about the rough frontier existence, morality and how violence is sometimes a necessary part of living. No movie sums these lessons up better than The Magnificent Seven. The movie was just as majestic as the soundtrack. To see Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and company astride their steeds, ready to save the day, all in pink plays with the ideas of masculinity, vigilantism and heroism.

What makes bad boys so appealing? It is a question that has perplexed parents and their daughters since the beginning of time. Russell chose one of the ultimate bad boys to make his statement about the allure of a man who lives outside of the law, makes his own rules and still has a heart –Marlon Brando in The Wild One. Painted boldly in red, Brando in his biker gear and looking defiant as ever in dark shades shows exactly why the bad boy is so tantalizing – there is nothing more intoxicating than the idea of a man being able to protect a woman from peril and no one messes with a bad boy.

Beauty, at times can be tragic, like a moon plant that dies in the face of dawn. The photo of Marilyn Monroe trying to shield her face as she suffers is the epitome of tragic, fragile beauty. This photo shows that sometimes the violence can come from within and is inflicted on ourselves.

The Dali Lama stated, “It is my belief that whereas the twentieth century has been a century of war and untold suffering, the twenty-first century should be one of peace and dialogue. As the continued advances in information technology make our world a truly global village, I believe there will come a time when war and armed conflict will be considered an outdated method of settling differences among nations.”

Russell Young photographed celebrities for more than 20 years, among them George Michael, Morrissey, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. He also directed hundreds of music videos. Looking for direction at one point, Young said, he went to Tuscany, sat on a hill and thought about what he wanted to do with his life. "At age 4, I wanted to be an artist, a clown or a space man. I've been a clown most of my life and if I own enough money I can go off into space, so I thought: Let's be an artist." He first thought he would create abstract art, but decades of looking at lights, darks, shades, negatives and silkscreen paintings of images from history and pop culture ended up shaping his style.

Young keeps his process of creating the diamond dust screen-prints secret, but revealed that his works are hand-pulled on the sister press used by Andy Warhol. "Some of the screens I used were like Warhol's old screens," he said. The diamond dust part came when he found a bag of diamond dust in his Brooklyn studio.

"We worked our magic and it worked. We don't throw the diamond dust on: Tinker Bell does it," he said. "We close the studio at night, leave it out for her, come in the morning, and there you have diamond dust paintings."

Rob Douglas’ abstract paintings are a balance between non-representation and reality. His expressive, geometric forms, pencil marks and scratches are juxtaposed against subtle layers of earthen-toned washes. When combined, these elements create a majestic pictorial equilibrium. Expansive rhythms of rich textures and hues are inspired by the New Mexico desert and are combined with forms that evoke a more urban environment. Douglas’ paintings are a masterful expression of the harmony that exists between nature and our man-made world.

Every inch of Douglas’ surface is saturated with intricate details obtained by his complex process of controlled dripping, hand-made tools (made of found objects in nature) and a mastery of the acrylic medium with which he combines raw pigments (imported from around the world), marble dust, chalk and charcoal.

Encaustic, a time honored method of painting using molten wax, is seeing new futures. Historically, encaustic has its roots in ancient Greece but is experiencing a modern renaissance. Meaning, to burn in, encaustic is an ancient painting medium practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. The oldest known pigment binder, encaustic combines molten beeswax with dry pigment and resin. Encaustic is impervious to moisture. In ancient Greece, this main preservation property of encaustic was instrumental for weatherproofing Greek warships. Pigmenting the wax also gave rise to decorating warships with iconography. After the fall of the Roman empire, encaustic fell into obscurity. Tempera, due to its ease of use and low cost to produce, became encaustic's successor. The 20th century saw a major resurgence of encaustic with the work of Jasper Johns and Diego Rivera among many others.

CONVERGING INFLUENCES

In Adam Shaw's paintings Western tradition meets Eastern sensibilities. Adam Shaw's work combines abstract tradition with a sensibility to the present moment that is the result of an affinity for Eastern spiritual teachings. " It is no coincidence that Eastern philosophy and art came to the West at the same time that abstract painting was deconstructing the visual terrain which had characterized Western painting for centuries," says Shaw.

His paintings have lush surfaces built up over the course of 3 to 5 years or more, and a luminous tension that evokes a deep emotional response in the viewer. "I want to make paintings that are as compelling from six inches away as they are from 25 feet," says the artist , a native New Yorker who has lived in Northern California for 25 years. The work has a strong narrative component, related, perhaps, to the fact that Shaw spent many years writing and translating poetry from Greek, Latin, Russian and Italian. He also spent 15 years as a chiropractor, and working with his hands in that way has loaned itself to the sensual, textural nature of his paintings.

Tales of Brave Ulysses

Although he has a strong affinity for abstraction, in no way does he dismiss so called traditional painting. "I'm obsessed with the history of painting," he says , "and always in question as to the possibilities for the future of painting. If you're serious about your work you have to bring to it a sense of responsibility, a striving to be part of a tradition." This is nowhere more evident in his oeuvre than in his latest body of work at Patricia Carlisle. Many of the paintings are strongly evocative of landscape, of trees, of water, of fire.

Shaw's work is constantly evolving, refining and redefining itself. "It is tempting once you arrive at a style or an image in your work to stop there and spend the next 20 years making the same painting, but for me that would be an artistic death,' he says. "The work always has to be somehow ahead of me. Once a viewer can wrap his mind around a painting it dies. For a work to succeed it must always be a mystery, no matter how much time you spend with it."

Journey

These are paintings characterized by bold application of paint. The artist uses brushes, sticks, hands, rags and "anything else I can think of" to get the paint onto the canvas, The works are made on the easel, on the floor, inside the studio and outside where the paint is allowed to bake in the sun.

Despite the labor intensive process involved in making his paintings for Shaw the most crucial aspect of their construction is the state of attention which can sometimes be reached after hours in the studio. "It's a state that occurs outside of time. That's where the real magic is."

Paradigm Shift

A paradigm shift denotes “a change in how a given society goes about organizing and understanding reality”.

For several years now I have been drawn to exploring the relationships between the nonvisible levels of subatomic reality and making visual art. I am not sure how this interest began, as there have been elements in my paintings for years that I now see as part of a pattern of which I was mostly unaware. My focus has evolved over time but what surfaces right now is the notion that I am involved, in my own personal way, with trying to construct visualizations that are suggestive of, but do not actually attempt to illustrate, concepts found within quantum physics. Those include the concepts of uncertainty, complimentarily, wave-particle duality, the observer effect and non-locality. To me these are fascinating concepts, which stretch my imagination as I attempt to apply them to visual art and painting in particular.

The crumbling of the atom was to my soul like the crumbling of the whole world”. Abstract art emerged from the paradigm shift that occurred in the early 1900’s and we are left to imagine what will emerge from the next one.

50 Gestures represents the many methods and approaches I have taken over several years with my work. The title of the exhibition refers to a swift approach in their making. Often preoccupied with science, I have taken great interest in geology, meteorology, astronomy, particle physics and natural phenomena. 50 Gestures has come to represent an important transition that embodies the many muses from which my work becomes manifest. Not all of these works lend themselves to a particular theme but rather have acted as a freeing of my alter ego, which is strongly present in each. Each piece embodies a sort of whimsical control. Upon completion of this body of work I realized, I am applying what I know now about painting to what I did not know then with each of these works. The viewer will be left to guess which is which.

Morgan Robinson is a visual artist based out of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Working primarily in the 3D realm of sculpture, his work blurs the lines between aesthetic beauty and functionality.

Morgan's early work is curvilinear, experimenting with techniques and materials that would inform his future pieces. His later work goes ventures into the geometric, while also occasionally returning to the organic. His materials consist primarily of metal and a variety of wood, his pieces paying respect to each of their original materials.

It was a coin toss between Florida and New Mexico.

Fate — or just plain ol' gravity — picked Santa Fe for John-Paul Philippe.

"I literally just flipped a coin," said Philippe, a Henryetta native, who moved to Santa Fe after a year or so in Dallas.

That was before the popular tourist destination was what it is now. Before Philippe went to London, then New York. Before he became an artist — a painter and designer — whose work is clamored after by individuals and businesses around the world.

You could say it all started at the Tulsa State Fair — but more on that in a second. Philippe's artistic bent was nurtured in his high chair.

"I would give him M&Ms, and he would start sorting the colors," said his mother, Virginia Broach, who lives in Tulsa. He'd eat each color individually and "save the brown ones for last."

She bought him private art lessons in Henryetta starting at age 8, when he submitted one of his works to the fair — and won sweepstakes in his age group.

"And a check for $25," said Philippe during a phone interview from his home in Connecticut.

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Philippe worked for Neiman Marcus in Dallas, drawing fashion, he said. A year later, a coin brought him to New Mexico, where he focused on his drawing and painting.

That preceded his move to London, though, which really broadened his horizons, exposing the young artist to more influences, he said. Twenty-something years later, he returned to the United States, settling in New York.

Don't confuse "settling" with static. From his studio in the heart of Soho, Philippe works with other professional artists on myriad projects, from architectural and furniture design to murals, sculptures and handcrafted woodwork.

Ever been to a Barney's New York store? You may have seen his work, as Philippe created handmade, back-lit fixture designs, murals, curtains, screens, scrims and sculptures for each Barney's flagship store in the United States and Japan. His work at the one in Dallas' NorthPark Center is a 40-foot steel piece at the store's main entrance on Boedeker Drive.

Asiana Airlines headquarters in Seoul, Korea

One of Philippe's largest installations was for the new Asiana Airlines headquarters in Seoul, Korea, he said. The new sculptures were installed during the construction of the building, and combine the spirit of aeronautical design with the movement of the surrounding landscape.

Nature rarely seems far from Philippe's design aesthetic. After all, he grew up in a rural environment, ensconced in nature.

"I was one of those who always tried to see shapes in clouds, shadows," he said. Or he'd notice the patterns and colors on soap suds in the kitchen sink.

Many of Philippe's creations are based on organic forms in nature, he said. That's evidenced in photos of his work on his new Web site, J-Pinc.com, the launch of which corresponded with the completion of the Asiana Airlines installation.

Philippe's other works include designing for private residences and, one of his earliest commissions, a seaside chapel in the Dominican Republic. And then there's that horse his mom told us about.

It was a "huge, fascinating piece" she saw of his at the Boston opening of Barney's New York, Broach said — a horse made out of coat hangers.

She asked her son how the idea to do that occurred to him, she said. " 'I used to do that all the time as a child,' he told me.

"I was such an over-protective mother," she said — surely she wouldn't have let him do that with metal hangers.

Apparently, he did it in his closet, Broach told us, laughing.

She loves the work he's done for Barney's, but Broach has a special place in her heart for Philippe's earliest pieces — his paintings as a youngster.

"He doesn't like them anymore," she said, "but they're my favorites."

Philippe probably won't ever retire, he said. But he may work from his barn at his Connecticut residence.

"I'd love to carve wood, and I wish I had more time to do ceramics."

As busy as he is now, though, picking between the two might have to come down to a coin toss.

It was 20 years ago that British photographer Russell Young first lent his eye to celebrity culture. The assignment was photographing George Michael for the sleeve of an album called “Faith”. That job launched a career and soon Russell was shooting musicians like Morrissey, Springsteen, Dylan and many other celebrities. The next natural step was directing music videos; Russell directed a hundred music videos during the heyday of MTV. Ten years into his career, Russell started painting, but his work remained private. Until 2003, when Young showed his first series of paintings called PIG PORTRAITS, this first show sold out. Young has risen to be an internationally acclaimed pop artist, creating larger than life silkscreen paintings of images from history and pop culture.

“My work is sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. My method of working is to search, destroy and create. The images of this series have been collected from newspaper cuttings, e-bay, long correspondence with police departments throughout the world or even given by celebrities themselves. The idea to create "anti-celebrity" portraits was probably a reaction to my former career. However, they turned out to be even more beautiful and iconic. There is undeniably this attitude that is very real, in your face, a beauty that is hard to ignore. My art is a sort of soundtrack to my life, loves, experiences and influences. These would be my heroes that are missing from Art History.”

Tulsa People Gallery Hopper: Dolls on Brookside

The fabulous space at Center One on Brookside lends itself perfectly to a gallery - long, thin, white and very simple. It shows off art in the best possible light.

Aberson Exhibits (next to KEO) is currently hosting a show by Lavada Nicholls, her first in the Tulsa in more than seven years. This show runs through Dec. 30 and displays 14 large-scale depictions of dolls that she has stumbled upon and photographed over the last three years - both in Europe and the United States. None of the dolls are hers; they are all found objects.

These “baby dolls” have a range of impressions - from scary to sweet to bizarre - but the gallerist says that most people have a surprisingly positive view of the show. In fact, she says, it’s almost like the images have eyes - they follow you all the way through the gallery (and even beyond, thanks to a windowed storefront). She says that these works certainly serve as conversation pieces.

Tulsa’s own Jeanne Tripplehorn has this to say about the show: “Lavada is the best kept secret in the world of photography. She possesses that rare ability to frame a subject in an unexpected way while capturing both motion and emotion in a still image. She is a universally free spirit whose creativity knows no borders. In her latest exhibition, “Loved and Lost, Lavada turns her lens on discarded dolls in a profoundly evocative way.”

Lavada Nicholls finds 'Lost' objects

Maybe it's the eyes.

Most of them are a brilliant, unnerving blue. Most of them are open wide and staring directly at you — although the ones where the eyes are aimed off in some other direction can be equally creepy.

After all what in the world could these things be looking at?

The simple fact is, these eyes look at nothing. They can't see anything. You don't need some fictional shark-hunting ship's captain to tell you that a doll has dead eyes.

Still, just try to look away.

"I guess what appealed to me about these dolls was that kind of macabre aspect," said Lavada Nicholls, the photographer whose show "Loved and Lost" is made up of 15 large-scale photographs — each measuring 4 feet by 5 feet — of dolls that have been discarded.

This will be the first show of Nicholls' work in her hometown in more than a decade. For much of that time, she and her husband Peter have been living in Europe — first in Brussels, now in a small village in France that Nicholls drolly calls "the French equivalent of Coweta or Porter."

Nicholls took her first courses in photography at the Philbrook Museum of Art in the 1970s, and during the 1980s and '90s her images were everywhere — from fine art galleries to the covers of long-gone publications such as Uptown News.

"I'm not doing any commercial work anymore," Nicholls said, "because it would require me getting a work permit and going through a whole bunch of things that seem like they would be too much of a hassle. And also, where I live now is pretty much 'Middle of Nowhere, France,' " she said, laughing. "Maybe if we still lived in some place like Brussels, which had a real, thriving arts scene, I would think differently. But right now, I'd rather concentrate on work that makes me happy."

Last year, Nicholls had a show of black-and-white portraits of the people who live in and around the village of Lisle-sur-Tarn, where she and Peter live, at the local art venue, the Musee Raymond Lafage.

Her recent work in black-and-white is notable for a kind of tenderness. But when Nicholls turns to making color images — especially digital images like the ones that make up "Loved and Lost" — a harder edge shows up in her photographs.

"I've only recently embraced the whole digital photography thing," she said. Her last Tulsa show, a 1998 exhibit simply titled "Red" at the M.A. Doran Gallery, featured work created through a range of "old-school" photographic techniques, such as photogravure.

"But it's so easy to get lulled into that immediate gratification with digital," she said. "It's appealing to be in the moment when making a photograph and not worrying about screwing up by using the wrong speed film or whatever."

Nicholls shot the "Loved and Lost" doll pictures in color because she wanted the images to be "aggressive."

"And big," she added, laughing.

The series was something that developed over time, she said. Over the course of a couple of years, Nicholls had gathered up cast-off dolls in Belgium, France, England and Tulsa. They range from one of the series of Bratz dolls to anatomically correct male and female dolls that Nicholls found in Europe.

"But I really hadn't thought of them as being a show until I got a call from (Aberson Exhibits director) Kim Fonder, who said she was interested in doing a show of my work, and did I have anything."

As for her own favorite dolls, Nicholls said that would have been a "Ricky Jr." doll, based on the character in the "I Love Lucy" TV show (which could lead one down a whole other vaguely disturbing line of thought about reality and fantasy and dolls based on actual people, but we will restrain ourselves).

"I don't know whatever happened to my Ricky Jr. doll," she said, a little wistfully.

Maybe Ricky Jr. is, even as you read this, sitting on some shelf, his big, round eyes unblinking as he stares soulfully off into space.

Or right at you.

Lavada's new exhibit is a valley of the dolls.

When Lavada Nicholls left Tulsa in 1999, she and her husband, Pete, took only two suitcases and moved to Belgium and then France. It is from Europe that Nicholls has worked on her current project, “Loved and Lost,” to be shown this month at Aberson Exhibits on Brookside.

Study her 35 mm film images for this project, and you’ll find yourself staring straight into the eyes of your childhood — that is, if you played with dolls. These haunting photos dig up old emotions, Nicholls says: sweetness, pathos, sadness, repulsion.

“We are attracted to these images out of nostalgia for our own past and the ‘beings’ we loved that helped us through the ages,” Nicholls says. “At the same time, we are repulsed that they have transitioned through love to become mere and sometimes grotesque objects. Were they not so human in their form, we could discount their decay. But we cannot, as we give pause to our own lost loves, and perhaps to our own beings.”

Let this Midwestern-meets-European woman rich in Tulsa roots — she took photography classes at Philbrook Museum in the ’70s, met her husband of 33 years at the Magician’s Theatre, took fashion photos for Marilyn Ihloff and hosted her first art exhibit at Living Arts of Tulsa in 1986 — transport you to the past with her craft.

HOW A CELEBRATED AMERICAN ARTIST WAS FORCED TO TRADE HIS MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR COLLECTION FOR A JOB SELLING DONUTS

When the economy sours, news anchors talk of housing and manufacturing, of hedge funds and barrels of oil. They generally don’t discuss the lives of artists, and how their careers are crushed into a dull oblivion. If artists survive the fiscal and emotional shakedown, they steady themselves as adjuncts in the Midwest, they design for architectural firms. They take corporate commissions and they sit on city planning boards. They might show again, but this time in coffee shops or farmers’ markets.

Artists fade, but they don’t disappear. Not the way Ford Beckman disappeared, at least. Beckman enjoyed heights few artists attain, and then no one in the art world could find him.

When Beckman’s name surfaced at showings, it was met with shoulder shrugs. Dealers scanned floors, looking for Beckman’s trademark velvet slippers, which he wore to exhibitions. They’d heard about financial issues, but they knew him as a man of resources. Where, they wondered, was Ford Beckman?

Beckman, now fifty-six, has been hiding in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where, until recently, he has been serving donuts for seven dollars an hour. A look into his eyes will tell you what you already know: there isn’t a more punishing zero than the sugary naught of a Krispy Kreme Hot Original Glazed. And yet Beckman is emerging, and doing so in one of the worst economic climates of our times. It’s a move that he feels particularly prepared to undertake.

To most in the art world, Ford Beckman came out of nowhere, when in fact he had been a lesser star in two different realms: golf and fashion.

Born in 1952, “Clancy” Beckman, as he was then known, was raised in a world of extremes. As a child, he and his brother ping-ponged between their divorced parents. His mother, an artist, lived in a meager two-bedroom bungalow in Florida; his father, “Spook” Beckman, an aloof, gum-chewing radio personality, owned a mansion in Ohio. Early on, Ford found peace in the midst of polarization, and one could argue that he even learned to generate the effect—a rhythm that still dictates his life.

Throughout his adolescence, painting came so naturally to Ford he didn’t think much of it. His art teachers marveled at his propensity for abstract work. Beckman says he has always sensed a complex relationship between colors, textures, and shapes. But instead of yielding to the siren’s call of aestheticism, he chose to perfect his golf swing. For years, Beckman practiced daily, and played in junior tournaments all over the world.

Just like his paintings, Beckman is something of a contradiction. He’s a heavy-set man, yet he gestures lightly and speaks quickly, like an excited teenager. He tells me that in the early ’70s, the televangelist Oral Roberts was building an athletics program at his university, and the school offered Beckman a golf scholarship.

“Oral and I used to hit golf balls at night together, up there on campus,” Beckman says. “I caddied for him on Saturdays, and he was the real deal. He taught me about faith and it changed my life.”

Roberts’s influence is most apparent in the religious titles of Beckman’s work. One of his panel series is called Holy Ground. Another later work—a solid white rectangle dividing a yellowed canvas—is called Salvation Painting: At the foot of the cross: To God Be the Glory. Beckman employs similarly evangelical titles across a majority of his work; he believes his paintings belong in churches more than galleries or museums.

His current studio is a large green Dutch barn in Tulsa. It sits off a bypass near the middle of town, backed up against a residential area and nestled among business offices. It’s the only building in the area with a gravel parking lot. The ground floor is dark and cluttered with a renovation-in-process, but the top floor is Beckman’s brightly-lit studio, a crisp, open space that gives his new series of drip paintings ample viewing room. Some of the works feature Beckman’s familiar colors—waxen yellow, slick black. Others are strikingly neon. Several of them have already been sold, one to the Armand Hammer Collection.

Beckman comfortably plants himself in the center of the room with his hands in the pockets of paint-splattered khakis. The series, Beckman estimates, might bring in two or three hundred thousand dollars—less than he would normally command, thanks to a newly depressed market.

Aberson's Exhibits will host a screening of the film "Off the Map," 7 p.m. Wednesday at the gallery, 36th Street and Peoria Avenue, in conjunction with the opening of its newest exhibit of paintings by Stan Berning.

Admission to the event will be by donations that will benefit Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS).

Berning's paintings and drawings are featured in the film, which was directed by Campbell Scott and stars Joan Allen and Sam Elliott. In the course of the film, Elliott's character creates a 40-foot watercolor painting on a sheet of wallpaper.

Berning said that he and director Scott had talked about the project for several years as Scott worked to bring the film to fruition. "In the end," Berning stated on his Web site, "I had just eight weeks to do all the work."

The completed mural can be see at Berning's Web site, tulsaworld.com/berning.

Released in 2003, the film won awards at film festivals in Taos, N.M., and Sarasota, Fla.

Berning will attend the screening and take part in a question-and-answer session afterwards. He will also be available to sign copies of his book, "About Art," which will be on sale at the event.

The exhibit at Aberson Exhibits is titled "A Natural History Part Five," and is made up of Berning's luminescent abstract paintings, that Berning described as "improvisations...as close to the spirit of pure improvisation as I have ever come."

This one's being billed as a trendy cocktail party and art opening. It's the 2009 ART 4 ART from 7-10 p.m. Oct 1 at Keo Restaurant and Aberson Exhibits in Center One on Brookside at 35th & Peoria.

Local artists Shelly Lewis Stanfield and Darshan Phillips will be featured at the opening, which will benefit the Tulsa Girl's Art School. Original artwork from both artists, as well as artwork from the students, will be on display and 25 percent from the sale of any artwork will go back to the art school.

Wine, beer and hors d'oeuvres will be served at the event. Tickets are $75 per person.

The school's mission is to empower disadvantaged girls through visual arts training. The school, which is affiliated with the Tulsa Community Foundation, works to provide specialized art training to talented and motivated elementary school-aged girls living in the inner city of Tulsa.

It provides professional-level art instruction by local art teachers and artists in a working art studio where students have a chance to sell their paintings. Funds from the sales are allocated between the artist and the school. The young artists may use their portion of the proceeds to purchase art supplies for home use, pay competition fees or gallery entry fees, or buy college savings bonds for their future studies. This helps each student learn the process of planning, creating and executing their artwork, and goes a step further by teaching basic business skills.

The amazing career of world-renowned fashion designer and painter Ford Beckman.

“Oh, I paint a little.”

That’s what Ford Beckman says these days when people in Tulsa who don’t know him ask what he does for a living.

That’s like Tiger Woods saying he plays a little golf.

In fact, playing a little golf was the reason Beckman came to Tulsa in the 1970s. He left here in 1980 to become one of the top fashion designers and contemporary artists in the world. Now, he is back temporarily for family and business matters.

The story of his amazing career was the subject of our conversation when we met recently at a coffee shop.

Despite the 100-degree heat, he was wearing a pink, long-sleeve Ralph Lauren shirt, ironed as stiff as a book cover; khakis splattered with paint; and madras canvas shoes.

The look was so right for a man who has created a career half in the cutthroat world of fashion design and half as a high-dollar painter based in New York.

Artist Statement:

A couple of years ago I would never have imagined that I would say that my work has been inspired by quantum physics, but it has. It started with a comment made by a person, whom I assume was a scientist. This person was in a gallery and saw my paintings. They asked the gallery assistant if I was a scientist. They said that there were “diffraction patterns” in my paintings. When I was told of this I couldn’t help but wonder how I could be making these images if I didn’t know anything about them. My curiosity led me into the strange world of subatomic particles and quantum physics. I realized that, while I am really not a scientist and never want to be one, as a painter I do share some interests with physicists. We are both interested in the nature of physical reality. Light, for example, stimulated the earliest theories of quantum mechanics and has been equally stimulating to painters. Both deal with observations, complementarities, and uncertainties. Quantum physics, however, has transformed ideas from theoretical possibilities almost one hundred years old into recently tested proven facts that have shown that observation is affected by both the observer and the observed, and that matter is a particle and a wave at the same time. Even more amazing is the fact that two particles can interact with each other in “no-time” even when separated by great distances without any exchange of energy. In the prevailing view of physical reality nothing can travel faster than the speed of light and interactions can only occur with the exchange of energy. If this is now proven to be incorrect on the micro level of reality it opens up very large questions about how these new facts affect our macro reality. These facts also challenge another prevailing idea, the separation of mind and matter. At this point I think it is not out of the realm of possibility that what has appeared as abstract and non-objective in painting could be the new objective realism. It certainly causes me to think about many things that have been assumed for a long time but that might now take on a different meaning in light of new information.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My roots are in abstraction. Originally, I used watercolor and mixed media on paper.

In 1975 I became attracted to the more substantive process of oil painting and, at the same time,
to a realistic approach. During the next several years I worked closely with such traditional
impressionists as Jimmye Walk and Tommy Maccione.

In 1981 I studied the monotype process, which led to etching, colligraph and other printmaking.
While working under the influence of such artists as Ron Pokrasso and Frank Ettenberg,
I returned to my abstract roots.

I find my appreciation for realism to be a constant rejuvenating force.

While studying a full range of subject, technique and material, I have found myself drawn to a minimalist approach; an editing down of subject to its essential elements.

Understanding that art communicates on a fundamentally subconscious / emotional level, I have strived to create work that resonates with the viewer instinctually through the use of color and form.

At their best these paintings are complex visions which defy easy answers.

When truly successful they evoke a simplicity which is not present.

In this volume photographers showcase their personal or observational take on ecology and sustainability.

In text essays Sir David King, Alain de Botton, Alan Sekula, David Buckland, Heike Serkow and Indian activist Vandana Shiva tackle ecological issues from different perspectives, giving a balanced overview of current environmentalism and how this theme is approached in the art world.

The Archive section of this book sheds light on rarely seen color images by photographers from the Farm Security Administration, bearing witness to an extensive investigation into American farming practice of the `30s and `40s. Scopefeatures a dynamic contemporary view on the subjects of ecology and sustainability from photographers such as Mary Mattingly, Andreas Gursky, Ellen Kooi and Stuart Franklin, among others. The building that is the subject of this illustrated text constitutes the first material expression of Kazuyo Sejima's studies on metropolitan housing, studies which proceed from the idea that not all subsidized housing is the same. Starting from a standard public apartment programme, the confrontation between a strictly modulated structure and a random disposition of the different rooms, or between the length of the building and the reduction of its built depth, also elicits a confrontation between habitable space and the surrounding landscape, and between the individual and the family unit. I am a recent graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and in the fall will be attending the Cooper Union to study art (likely with an emphasis in photography and printmaking). I have received a number of awards including the Oklahoma State Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in the Arts (2009) and the Mayfest Young Artist Award (2008). In recent years, I have become very involved in the Tulsa arts scene and look forward to it’s growth in the coming years.

Born in Tulsa raised on Brookside. I work as a bartender and do construction as well. My work is created to stimulate the viewer’s eye. I take my everyday factors and manipulate accordingly to the sensations of that day. My shirt was surprisingly mapped out in creating it. It passes on the thought that everything is/can be broken down further than one can usually imagine. Nothing stops.

I will be a senior at Booker T. Washington, and will complete my IB drawing portfolio, as well as my second AP portfolio. In most of my work, I experiment with color theory, using unorthodox combinations to create human faces (my favorite subject matter). After entering several art competitions, I have won several Levit Prizes, the TASM first place and best of show, Scholastic twice, as well as many others. My Cherokee ancestry served as the original inspiration for my t-shirt design, and the juxtaposition of the taped-on smile is a choice that represents invented happiness. For my next piece, I plan to create a face with a color palate that provokes the opposite feeling of the expression (i.e. a gloomy face with vibrant colors).

The facts: Born in Tulsa and have lived here my whole life. Even as I prepare to leave for the University of Oregon this fall, it still blows my mind I will be living a life outside of Tulsa. I’m no longer a kid—I’m wondering how and when this happened. I live to travel. I try not to love art so much, but as I get older I continue to learn how essential to my life it really is. My family playfully deems my art aesthetic “Babies and Triangles”. It may seem like what I do is simply shapes and people, but I like to think of it as a wonderful modification of the human form. My deisgn mixes something subjectively beautiful, the human body and human experience, with mathematically beautiful shapes to create a design that is classic and yet, I hope, still interesting and innovative.
